Protection of Cultural Heritage | ZIF-DGAP Workshop Note

On October 2020, ZIF in cooperation with the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) organized a digital workshop on cultural heritage protection as part of EU crisis management missions and operations.

10 experts, among others from the European External Action Service, UNESCO and the German Foreign Office, discussed the topic of cultural heritage protection. The focus was on the experiences of the EU mission in Iraq, which was the first to explicitly include cultural heritage protection in its mandate. How should future missions work on this topic? What adjustments need to be made in order to integrate cultural heritage protection into EU foreign policy in the long term and in a sustainable manner? The main points of the discussion as well as some conclusions can be found in this workshop note.
