P3+2 issue joint statement supporting UNSMIL efforts towards elections

Council extends mandates of EUBAM Libya

[…] The mandate of the EU Integrated Border Management Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM Libya) has been renewed for two years until 30 June 2025. In the context of the Strategic Review of EUBAM Libya, the Council decided that the mission should contribute to enhancing the capacity of the relevant Libyan authorities and agencies to manage Libya’s borders, to fight against cross-border crime - including human trafficking and migrant smuggling - and to counter terrorism.

‘Persistent disagreements’ must be overcome, Security Council hears

Libyan political leaders who are being encouraged to set aside their differences for the sake of a new democratic future, must put the interests of the people “above all else”, said the UN’s Special Representative for the country on Monday. Abdoulaye Bathily, briefed the Security Council and acknowledged the recent efforts of the so-called “6+6” Committee working towards new elections, as an important step forward, though insufficient to resolve the most contested issues.

Agreement on electoral law reached in Morocco

The agreement provides that the parliamentary and presidential elections are held simultaneously and that the next legislative authority is composed of two chambers, the National Assembly and the Senate.

Libya parliament suspends rival eastern-based PM Bashagha

Libya’s eastern-based parliament has voted to suspend its appointed Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha, and assign his finance minister Osama Hamada to his duties. Parliament spokesperson Abdullah Belhaiq announced the suspension of Bashagha, who is a rival to the prime minister of the UN-recognised Government of National Unity (GNU), on Tuesday.

New mechanism must track and tackle ‘gross’ violations in Libya

“Libyan authorities, armed groups, smugglers, and human traffickers should not assume that the eyes of the international community have now left Libya,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said. “It is crucial that we redouble efforts to secure accountability for past violations and continue to monitor the reality on the ground to prevent future violations,” he said, echoing calls for action made by the recently concluded Independent Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) on Libya.
