Council extends mandate of EU military Operation IRINI in the Mediterranean until 2025

The Council today extended the mandate of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) military operation in the Mediterranean -  EUNAVFOR MED IRINI until 31 March 2025. The decision was taken in the wake of the Strategic Review of the operation carried out by the Political and Security Committee.

Bathily proposes election support body, as public frustration mounts

Twelve years after its revolution, political tensions in Libya remain high, and its leaders face a “major legitimacy crisis” amid widespread public frustration, the UN’s senior official in the country told the Security Council on Monday, announcing plans to create a new mechanism in support of crucial elections.

Libyan military committee agrees coordination on foreign forces departure

The "5+5" military committee of officers from both main sides of the civil war has agreed on a coordination mechanism for the withdrawal of foreign forces in liaison with neighbouring Sudan and Niger. The procedural step would allow for joint coordination and data exchange to facilitate the full withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya, the UN Libya envoy Abdoulaye Bathily announced after a meeting in Egypt.

Recommit to Libya ceasefire, urges senior UN representative
