The current discussions on the Strategic Compass offer an opportunity to get EU crisis management back on track. In his comment at Internationale Politik Quarterly, Tobias Pietz argues that the process of the Compass so far is to much sided on defence and collective security. As interest of member states in CSDP missions and operations has already decreases since the Treaty of Lisbon, there is a risk that (especially civilian) missions will be even further sidelined. Instead, the Compass should lead to a clarification of the EU’s level of ambition and back to a stronger engagement of member states in crisis management.
