What medical and professional preparations should you make before going on a peacekeeping mission? How do you cope with the new everyday reality of deployment? How do you behave in situations that threaten your own safety? The new edition of the In Control Handbook provides answers to these and many other questions ahead of and during a deployment on a peacekeeping or crisis management mission. Concise information on all aspects of peace operations makes the handbook a reliable companion for civilian experts.

For the past 12 years, In Control has provided a compact and practical overview of the challenging reality of missions. Experts deployed on missions need to be flexible to react quickly to new situations and adapt to changing conditions. The handbook can help experts make informed decisions and better understand the bigger picture. Among other things, it provides an overview of the key players in crisis management. It explains how missions and their mandates are developed and provides practical advice for day-to-day operations in the field, including guidance on cultural sensitivity and building trust with local partners. It also focuses on the physical and mental health and safety of civilian personnel. Finally, it contains tips for returning from the area of deployment and helps to develop strategies for successful reintegration.

The first edition of the handbook was published in 2012 by Europe's New Training Initiative on Civilian Crisis Management (ENTRi). ENTRi was a consortium of 12 European training institutions, with ZIF coordinating the project and managing its secretariat. Since then, the handbook has been continuously developed and updated. Now, twelve years after the first edition of the handbook, the fifth edition is now being published by the European Union Civilian Training Initiative (EUCTI) project. EUCTI is a consortium of eight European training organisations, including ZIF.
