Workshop series on the implementation of the Humanitarian-Development-Peace-Nexus at country level

| ZIF news

This autumn, ZIF organized a three-part workshop series entitled "Opportunities, Challenges and Approaches in Implementing the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus (HDP Nexus) at Country Level". The series was a premiere in which experts from NGOs, GIZ, KfW, foundations and think tanks came together to develop practical recommendations for policymakers.

After an online kick-off event, the 35 participants from 25 organizations, all working in the different areas of the HDP Nexus, met to exchange on challenges and good practices in the implementation of the HDP Nexus. Based on their experiences, the participants developed concrete recommendations for the operationalization of the approach in the key areas of coordination, peace, localization and financing. The recommendations were addressed both to the organizations themselves and to the relevant departments at the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

On November 23, participants presented the results and recommendations and discussed them with political decision-makers. The aim was to ensure that the knowledge of experts from the field is shared directly with policymakers.

The Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus describes the interface between humanitarian aid, development cooperation and peacebuilding. The aim is to jointly find sustainable, local solutions in fragile contexts, thereby reducing the need for humanitarian aid in the medium term and consolidating development processes. The topic is also gaining momentum in Germany: This year, both the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development have set up HDP Nexus units. ZIF has been working on the Nexus approach since 2020 in order to raise awareness of civilian aspects of the peace component.
