ZIF Mediation Peer-Coaching for OSCE Deputy Heads (Moldova and Western Balkans)

On October 8th and 9th, 2024, the Center for International Peace Operations (ZIF) hosted a Mediation Peer Coaching event in Belgrade. The event brought together deputy heads of OSCE missions from the Western Balkans and Moldova who are involved in conducting or supporting dialogue facilitation and mediation efforts, including at the local level. This gathering marked the first opportunity for these deputy mission leaders to convene, reflect collectively, and exchange ideas on this crucial topic. Dr. Nataliya Mirimanova, a seasoned mediation expert, joined ZIF on-site to share her personal experiences and in-depth knowledge of mediation concepts and processes with the participants. The Mediation Peer Coaching was facilitated by Sebastian Dworack, Head of ZIF's Policy, Partnerships & Innovation, and Alischa Kugel, Deputy Head of Policy, Partnerships, and Innovation. Their guidance fostered an environment of open dialogue and exchange among the attending deputy mission leaders.
"I am pleased that our Mediation Peer Coaching format has proven so successful with the OSCE leadership. As with leaders from other international organizations, we have once again found that the exchange and mutual consultation on an equal footing is experienced as particularly enriching, and unfortunately there are too few formats for this. Our proven format aims to fill precisely this gap," - Sebastian Dworack.
The OSCE plays a crucial role in maintaining peace, security, and cooperation among its participating states. Mediation and dialogue facilitation are central instruments in its work, ranging from conflict prevention to direct mediation efforts. In regions such as the Western Balkans and the Republic of Moldova, OSCE missions are of vital importance for securing lasting peace and promoting dialogue between different communities, with a special focus on women, youth, and civil society.
