Fresh from holding the most extensive elections in its history, the Central African Republic (CAR) is entering what the UN’s top envoy in the country describes as a “decisive period” in consolidating fragile peace gains, even as security challenges persist and disarmament efforts continue. 

The Special Criminal Court (SCC) of the Central African Republic is at serious risk of closure in 2026, potentially depriving thousands of victims and survivors of war crimes and crimes against humanity of justice and reparations, Amnesty International said today.

Concerns about irregularities, political interference, and security pressures risk putting the credibility and inclusiveness of key elections in the Central African Republic into question, Human Rights Watch said today. The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) until 15 November 2026. By a recorded vote of 14 in favour and 0 against, with 1 abstention (United States), the Council adopted resolution 2800 (2025) (to be issued as document S/RES/2800(2025)).  Through that text, the 15-nation organ decided that MINUSCA shall comprise up to 14,046 military personnel and expressed its firm intention to review the number of personnel following the successful completion of the electoral process scheduled in 2025 and 2026. 

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic — a lynchpin country for broader regional stability — requires strong financial support amid UN systemwide liquidity constraints, the Organization’s top official in the country told the Security Council today, as several delegates hailed the Mission’s work to date as a “success story of UN peacekeeping”.
