ZIF world map peace operations 2024/25 published

The new edition of our well-known world map of peace operations provides important information and figures on missions of the UN, EU, OSCE and other organisations as well as on the respective German participation of the Bundeswehr, police and civilian experts.
In terms of content, the map shows current developments in peacekeeping operations: Compared to the previous year, the total number of peacekeeping personnel has fallen by around 12% from 135,000 to the current 118,000. This is primarily due to the closure of the large UN mission in Mali. In contrast, the EU opened another mission in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden last year and increased the total number of personnel on its missions by around 20% to 5,100.
‘The upheavals in the Sahel have had a major impact on the number and strength of peacekeeping missions,’ says Tobias von Gienanth, Research Associate at ZIF. ‘At the end of 2023, there were still six missions in the region with around 21,000 people. Today, there are only two missions left with a total of 100 people.’
ZIF was able to slightly increase the number of seconded German experts in 2024. There are currently around 181 civilian experts working in peace operations, at international organisations in headquarters and in the field, as well as in humanitarian missions.
