Fresh fighting erupted on Wednesday in DR Congo’s troubled east between army troops and the M23 rebel group after a week of relative calm, local sources said. … Last week, a helicopter with the UN peacekeeping mission crashed while on reconnaissance over the area, killing eight peacekeepers. The cause is being investigated.

The UN chief on Tuesday together with the Security Council, strongly condemned an attack by suspected militia members, on peacekeepers serving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which left one Nepali ‘blue helmet’ dead.

UN pledges more support for internally displaced persons in Ituri province

The United Nations will work together with the authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as well as other partners, in ensuring security in the eastern part of the country, said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN’s top peacekeeping official.

Eighteen people were killed on Tuesday in an attack in remote northeast DR Congo by CODECO, a notorious ethnic militia, a local official and a civilian campaigner said.

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) must ensure civilian protection in the wake of recent deadly raids on camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs), the UN human rights office, OHCHR, said on Tuesday. 

Peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have stepped up their presence in the area around a camp for displaced people in Ituri province following a deadly attack this week, the United Nations said on Thursday. 

Militia fighters have massacred at least 60 people, mostly internally displaced persons (IDPs), at Savo camp in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have agreed to extend their armies’ joint operation against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the eastern Congo provinces of Ituri and North Kivu, now into its third month.
