Aristide granted temporary asylum in Nigeria

(Quelle: UN News) Nigeria has offered ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide temporary asylum until he can find another place to go, according to the Nigerian president's spokeswoman, who said the 15-nation Caribbean Community had appealed to the country on behalf of Aristide.

Tensions mount as U.S. troops come under fire

Storm brews as Aristide 'returns'

(Quelle: BBC) Ousted Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide has arrived on a visit to Jamaica, sparking a diplomatic storm. Haiti's acting prime minister recalled his ambassador to Jamaica to protest at Mr Aristide's return to the region a fortnight after fleeing Haiti. Observers fear Mr Aristide's proximity to Haiti could revive the violence that forced him into exile late last month.

Haiti's new leader sees a long transition

Only Security Council can call for UN probe of Aristide's leaving Haiti - Annan

(Quelle: UN News) United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today said the Security Council was responsible for deciding whether there should be an investigation of how President Jean-Bertrand Aristide came to leave Haiti. 'This is an issue that the Council will have to discuss and determine whether it takes it up or not, because the Council acted on the assumption that the President had resigned and they had a letter of resignation before them,' he said as he entered UN Headquarters, replying to a question on calls for a probe from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the African Union (AU).
