Security forces in the central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan have stormed the home of former President Almazbek Atambayev in an attempt to detain him. Mr Atambayev's supporters clashed with the troops and one officer died from gunshot wounds, officials said. It is understood Mr Atambayev is still inside his compound, on the outskirts of the capital Bishkek. Mr Atambayev has been accused of corruption, which he denies. Parliament stripped him of immunity in June.
Kyrgyzstan has been attempting to build a new stretch of road in the area for years, stopping and restarting construction work repeatedly while negotiators from the two countries try to reach a formal border delineation agreement.
A disputed section of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan reopened on March 18 following the successful conclusion of four days of bilateral talks. The border had been closed following violent clashes between locals on March 13 that left two Tajik citizens dead and three Kyrgyz citizens hospitalized.
