The Council today decided to strengthen the EU's restrictive measures concerning Sudan by introducing new sectoral measures targeting the war economy. The measures are designed to curb sources of financing for the conflict and further increase pressure on those fuelling the war.

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out brutal mass killings, systematic abductions of women and girls, and mass gang rapes in El Fasher, the UN Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan said in a new report which provides more evidence that atrocities committed by warring parties in the north African nation constitute distinct markers of genocide. The SAF and the RSF operate as shifting coalitions of armed groups rather than unified organizational structures, impacting not only the course of the war but also the challenges for post-conflict stability.

[…] The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has warned of an impending humanitarian “catastrophe” as el-Obeid is expected to be the next site for major ground clashes between the RSF and Sudanese military. Many countries have also raised the alarm about atrocities being carried out in the city.

The war in Sudan threatens to spiral further as the strategically-important town of El Obeid continues to face “relentless” drone attacks by advancing paramilitary militias, the UN’s human rights chief, Volker Türk, said on Friday.

The Sudanese authorities announced on Monday that the Adre border crossing – critical for humanitarian aid delivery into the Darfur and Kordofan regions – will remain available through 30 September.
