A spate of attacks in a disputed region claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan has left 32 people dead including a UN peacekeeper, local officials said.

Sudan and South Sudan must respect the demilitarization of Abyei and evacuate their forces, Security Council members urged today, as senior officials reported on the latest political, security and humanitarian developments, including the impact of ongoing fighting in Sudan on agreement on the final status of the disputed area.

[…] During the reporting period, no progress was made in the Abyei political process amid the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in the Sudan, which erupted just five days after the meeting of the High -Level Committee of the Sudan and South Sudan on Abyei, held in Khartoum on 9 and 10 April.

The United Nations Interim Security Force in Abyei (UNISFA) has expressed serious concerns over a recent attack that targeted its helicopter in the South Kordofan capital, Kadugli.

Sudan and South Sudanese leaders on Monday signed the final communique on the fate of the disputed Abyei Area.

Sudan and South Sudan are finally on the way to reaching an agreement on the final status of Abyei, the disputed oil-rich region on the border between the two countries.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has called for high-level engagement to defuse tension and escalation of renewed clashes in the disputed region.
