CAR leader to stick by 2019 peace pact despite coup bid

Central African Republic President Faustin Archange Touadera Saturday said he would honor a 2019 peace pact with 14 rebel groups despite a recent bid by six of them to topple him. … On Friday, the CAR parliament approved a six-month extension to a state of emergency declared by the government to help combat armed groups it accuses of seeking to mount a coup.

Rights expert welcomes transfer of war crimes suspect to ICC

CAR authorities surrendered Mahamat Said Abdel Kani, a commander of the Séléka rebel coalition, to the court on Sunday, on account of an arrest warrant issued under seal on 7 January. … “The transfer of Mahamat Said Abdel Kani on 24 January sends a strong message. Justice is an essential pillar of the ongoing peace and reconciliation process and the construction of the rule of law”, said Yao Agbetse, UN Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the CAR.

CAR government says forces killed 44 rebels in counteroffensive

Central African Republic troops killed 44 rebel fighters participating in a push to encircle the capital Bangui and overturn newly-reelected President Faustin Archange Touadera, the government said Monday. … The country’s six most powerful armed groups, which control two-thirds of the CAR’s territory in an eight-year conflict, joined forces in December, calling themselves the Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC).

Two UN peacekeepers killed in CAR, as 2021 death toll rises to nine worldwide

Rebels attack Central African Republic capital amid election dispute

Rebels attacked the Central African Republic capital of Bangui on Wednesday, in an escalation of violence following the presidential election last month. President Faustin-Archange Touadera's army, with the aid of Russian and Rwandan troops alongside U.N. security forces, repelled the attacks, authorities said. … The United Nations confirmed that one Rwandan peacekeeper was killed in Wednesday’s attack.
