(Quelle: UN News) Calling on the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) to step up its efforts to prevent crime and reduce violence in the impoverished Caribbean country, the Security Council today extended the mission’s mandate by another six months. At a meeting at UN Headquarters in New York, the Council voted unanimously to extend the mandate through 15 February next year, six months earlier than the date requested by Secretary-General Kofi Annan in a recent report. The resolution passed by the Council calls for MINUSTAH to be comprised of up to 7,200 peacekeeping troops and as many as 1,951 police officers, as well as 16 corrections officers seconded from other UN Member States. As of mid-July, there were some 6,200 troops and 1,687 police.

Des élections beaucoup plus difficile que les présidentielles, beaucoup plus difficiles que les législatives », en raison des 1420 postes électifs à pourvoir au niveau des collectivités territoriales, a affirmé Jacques Bernard à l'occasion de la conférence de presse hebdomadaire du CEP. Présent à la table de conférence, le président du CEP, Max Mathurin, a rassuré que la date retenue pour la tenue de ces joutes sera connue au cours du mois d'août. « D'ici la semaine prochaine, nous serons en mesure de fixer la date », a promis Max Mathurin.

In a joint press conference in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, with President René Préval, Mr. Annan said he has asked the Security Council to extend the mandate of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) by 12 months, instead of the usual six, as a signal of his belief that many difficulties lie ahead for the country.

The decision came after a one-day meeting of donors in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. The gathering included delegates from the World Bank, the European Union, and the Inter-American Development Bank. The aid is much more than the $540m (£293m) the Haitian government had asked for to stabilise the economy.
