Republic of Kosovo at 15: A breakthrough in the making?

On 17 February 2008, the parliament in Prishtina declared Kosovo’s independence. A good opportunity to have a look back: One basic constant has remained unchanged since then: Knowing full well that its claim to Kosovo is unrealistic and also not really in its own interest, Serbia has been opposing Kosovo’s recognition under international law.

Currently, a concerted international diplomatic initiative is aiming at a breakthrough for a comprehensive agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, which would result in de facto recognition. With all the pressure that the international community is presently exerting, it must rule out the possibility that the necessary compromises will undermine Kosovo's statehood.
