Some 20,000 protesters backing Moldova's incoming pro-EU president have taken to the streets of the capital demanding the government's resignation and early general elections.

Opposition candidate Maia Sandu has won Moldova's presidential election after a run-off vote against the incumbent Igor Dodon, preliminary results show.

Moldovan Prime Minister Ion Chicu reshuffled his cabinet on Monday with five new ministers after his coalition partners from the Democratic Party, PD, redrew their ministers on Saturday, ahead of the run-off for the presidential elections due next Sunday, November 15.

Moldova’s Central Election Commission (CEC) announced early Monday that the opposition leader won more votes than the incumbent president in the presidential election, but not enough to avoid a run-off. The CEC said that with almost all ballots counted, former Prime Minister Maia Sandu had 36.10% of the vote, while President Igor Dodon had 32.66%. The second round of voting is scheduled for November 15.
