Training offered to Haiti police

(Quelle: Jamaica Gleaner) Police Commissioner Francis Forbes says the Jamaican Police Force is willing to assist in the training of Haitian police officers at the Police Academy, once conditions are back to normal in that country. 'We would gladly open our doors to assist in the training of senior police officers,' said Forbes, speaking in his capacity as president of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP).

Aristide: US forced me to leave

(Quelle: BBC) The exiled former President of Haiti, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, has said that he was forced to leave his country. In interviews with US television and news agencies, he said he had been the victim of a 'coup d'etat'. He said he had signed documents relinquishing power because of fears that violence would erupt if he did not comply with the demands of US agents.

Security Council authorizes three-month Multinational Interim Force

(Quelle: UN News) Acting just hours after Jean-Bertrand Aristide resigned as President of Haiti, the United Nations Security Council this evening unanimously authorized the immediate deployment of a Multinational Interim Force to the troubled nation. … Adopting a resolution under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, … , the Council mandated the operation to contribute to a secure and stable environment in the country, to facilitate the provision of relief aid to those in need, and to help the Haitian police and the Haitian Coast Guard maintain law and order and protect human rights. The Council decided that the operation would be stationed in Haiti “for a period of not more than three months” while declaring its readiness to establish a follow-on UN stabilization force … .

Aristide tritt zurück und flieht aus Haiti

(Quelle: SZ) Nach wochenlangen Aufständen in Haiti und wachsendem internationalen Druck hat Haitis Staatschef Jean Bertrand Aristide am Sonntag sein Amt niedergelegt und das Land verlassen. Wie französische und US-Diplomaten in der Hauptstadt Port-au-Prince mitteilten, unterzeichnete Aristide am Morgen seine Rücktrittserklärung und setzte sich mit unbekanntem Ziel ab. Der Vorsitzende des Obersten Gerichtshofs, Boniface Alexandre, übernahm gemäß der Verfassung übergangsweise Aristides Posten.
